Background of the author
Class Discussion Questions:
1. In "Barn Burning," the narrator of this story uses an immense vocabulary. Look for some particularly heavy expressions that he uses to describe the feelings and observations of the boy. Write them down and then define them.
2. What does this vocabulary tell us about the narrator? What does it tell us about the boy?
3. What is the point of view of the narrator on the story? How can he know the present, past, and future of the boy?
4. The second time we see the father in front of a Justice of the Peace, he says to his boy, "Go back to the wagon." Why does he have to disobey and stay?
5. Explain the boy's mixed attitude toward his father. Is it as simple as loyalty vs. justice?
6. Explain the last line of the story: "He did not look back."
